The Big Picture

The week sat squarely in the back half of the 2025.2 "Flamingo" cycle (R-12), with feature freeze about eight weeks out. The biggest forward-looking item was the TC's R-12 summary confirming that PTL and TC nominations open August 6, and reminding contributors of the firm July 19 OpenInfra membership-renewal deadline. The DCO transition had landed smoothly the week prior. On the technical side, the most consequential signal was a Cinder/Ceph retype workaround landing and Stephen Finucane opening a serious question about the future of pastedeploy in OpenStack services.

Releases & Announcements

Goutham Pacha Ravi's R-12 TC summary confirmed self-nominations for PTL and four TC seats open August 6 via the openstack/election repo. The CFP for the OpenInfra Summit Europe (Paris-Saclay, 17–19 October 2025) was closing July 8. Governance proposals out for review include the Eventlet-removal timeline adjustment, os-test-images releases, the TC affiliation declaration requirement and the Monasca retirement.

Ian Y. Choi reported that the Zanata translation job failures after Python 3.8 deprecation were fixed via project-config patch 954370 after confirming Java 8 still works on Ubuntu Noble; meanwhile the Weblate migration progress is being accelerated through a mentoring program.

Development & Technical Decisions

The headline architectural discussion came from Stephen Finucane, who asked the community what to do about pastedeploy. While attempting to bootstrap an oslo.wsgi package out of oslo.service (as part of the broader eventlet migration), he found himself pulling in Paste, PasteDeploy, Routes and WebOb — all "minimally maintained bordering on unmaintained." His question: rather than wrapping a new project around dying libraries, should affected services just define a static middleware chain and move on? It's the same topic that came up 18 months ago without a conclusion; deployer input is wanted.

Cinder/Ceph retype efficiency moved from question to fix. Yuta Kambe (Fujitsu) confirmed his earlier zero-fill bloat report was resolved after applying Cinder change 954217. Empty volumes, attached bootable volumes and detached bootable volumes all retyped between Ceph HDD and SSD types without inflating backend usage.

Operators surfaced several practical issues. Maximilian Stinsky-Damke flagged that since Neutron 2024.2, the subnet-external-network extension is loaded by default (bug 2051831) — exposing external-network subnets to non-admin users, cluttering Horizon and Octavia create dialogs with subnets they cannot actually use, with no apparent way to disable. Simon Stephan asked how to auto-assign a default Neutron QoS policy on project creation after migrating from libvirt-based per-flavor bandwidth limits to OVN; the lack of a system-wide default has people resorting to listening for project.create events on RabbitMQ. Masahito Muroi raised a Nova flavor-visibility gap: there's no clean way to let users see a custom flavor that requires approval to actually use it — is_public is binary. Jiatong Shen asked about enabling compressed live migration for memory-heavy workloads on 10 GbE. And Pooja Sangle raised that HPE Superdome Redfish exposes VirtualMedia under /Systems/{id}/VirtualMedia/ rather than /Managers/...; Iury Gregory confirmed sushy/ironic already supports both paths (sushy bug 2039458).

Heads Up / Action Needed

  • July 19: last day to renew OpenInfra individual membership to retain 2026 board-election voting rights.
  • August 6: PTL/TC self-nominations open.
  • pastedeploy future: Stephen Finucane is collecting deployer input on whether to keep Paste/PasteDeploy/Routes alive in an oslo.wsgi or migrate services to a static middleware chain. Weigh in if your deployment depends on paste.ini.
  • Neutron 2024.2+ operators: check whether the default subnet-external-network extension is acceptable for your users; no disable knob is exposed today.

Community & Events

Bartosz Bezak's Kolla meeting and Brian Haley's Neutron drivers meeting (July 11) were both canceled for lack of agenda. Tatiana Ovchinnikova canceled the next two Horizon weekly meetings (July 23 and 30) due to PTO. The Public Cloud SIG met July 2. 吴文相 (Wu Wenxiang) opened a Skyline call for additional core reviewers, noting review pace has slowed despite growing user interest. Cyril Roelandt and Thierry separately pinged Cinder, Glance, Telemetry and Barbican about deliverables defined in governance but never released, asking teams to either prepare release files or remove the entries from governance ahead of Flamingo.
