The Big Picture

OpenStack 2025.2 Flamingo shipped on October 1 — the project's 32nd release — and the openstack/releases repository reopened for the 2026.1 Gazpacho cycle, lifting all freezes. The rest of the week was prep: Debian packages caught up the same day, packaging teams started smoke-testing, and the community pivoted toward the OpenInfra Summit Europe (Oct 17–19, Paris-Saclay) and the virtual PTG (Oct 27–31). Two leaderless projects, Venus and Vitrage, moved further toward inactive status. A pair of Nova/QEMU memory fixes also landed just in time.

Releases & Announcements

OpenStack 2025.2 Flamingo is officially released. Előd Illés posted the final-release announcement on October 1. The new release site lists every component with version and project release notes. stable/2025.2 is now a fully normal stable branch, and Gazpacho is open (dev list copy).

Flamingo on OpenInfra Live. The release episode aired October 2 with Goutham Pacha Ravi (TC), Iury Gregory (Ironic), René Ribaud (Nova), Carlos Silva (Manila), and Brian Haley (Neutron) — recording on YouTube and LinkedIn.

Debian Flamingo packages available and validated. Thomas Goirand (zigo) finished packaging Flamingo for Debian Unstable, with tempest passing. Ironic (pysnmp 7) and Mistral (a stuck unit test) are still in flight. The Trixie backport repo is enabled via extrepo enable openstack_flamingo; updates are now event-driven, with deb-status refreshed on every push. The legacy per-suite repo URLs are deprecated.

Heads Up / Action Needed

Nova memory-release fixes land for 2025.2. Sean Mooney flagged nova patch 952306 — which addresses qemu not releasing memory — as part of 2025.2. A second fix, 952961, restores the ability to disable the memballoon device entirely; setting mem_stats_period_seconds=0 is the recommendation for realtime hosts.

Bitergia dashboard maintenance Oct 6–7. openstack.biterg.io is offline from Oct 6 08:00 UTC to Oct 7 16:00 UTC for an OpenSearch upgrade; data updates resume Wednesday.

Maintainer + Contributor surveys (new URLs). Jeremy Stanley updated the surveys for the Flamingo retrospective (including new review-priority questions) — Maintainer survey, Contributor survey. Epoxy retrospective responses were too few for solid signal; this is the round to fix that. A Forum session "Improving Contributor Experience in the OpenStack Community" runs Sunday 14:45 in the Alfred Sauvy room at Summit Europe, and Jeremy will host a community office hour at 14:00 UTC Thursday of the PTG in the maint-contrib-xp track.

Development & Technical Decisions

i18n: Weblate migration crosses a milestone. Seongsoo Cho posted an extensive status update on moving translation from Zanata (no longer maintained) to Weblate. Fifteen dashboard projects have already been successfully migrated: cloudkitty-dashboard, designate-dashboard, freezer-web-ui, heat-dashboard, horizon, ironic-ui, magnum-ui, manila-ui, networking-bgpvpn, neutron-fwaas-dashboard, neutron-vpnaas-dashboard, octavia-dashboard, trove-dashboard, zaqar-ui, zun-ui. Only master is migrated for now; stable-branch support is being investigated. Replacement Zuul jobs are queued in zuul-jobs, project-config, and the i18n repo.

Kolla: making upstream-source mirrors easier in image builds. Michael Still — working on enriching SPICE VDI support across Nova/Kolla-Ansible — proposed abstracting Kolla's upstream sources so that operators can centrally override them with local mirrors. He's hitting intermittent upstream connectivity (rate limits, flaky networking) when building images in his homelab CI. Current sources live in kolla/template/repos.yaml; see also Python packages build options.

Neutron oslo.messaging port-notification broadcast. Sean Mooney's 9-message thread on broadcasting port notifications continued — this overlaps with Arnaud Morin's parallel pointer to oslo.messaging patch 963475 in the following week.

Skyline: core reviewer self-nomination from Reet Srivastava citing recent contributions (959304 configurable default domain, 958515 Barbican Key-Manager panel, 961359 Nova Unrescue action). Doug Goldstein's parallel thread on Skyline workload sharing flagged the need to spread maintenance beyond a single company; the project will get focused attention at the PTG.

Keystone slave_connection on Galera read-only nodes. Tyler Wilson on Ubuntu 24.04 / Keystone 25.0.0 reported that even simple reads (openstack user list) still hit the primary write node despite slave_connection being set. Relevant changes referenced: oslo.db 945415 and keystone 926776.

Ironic: anyone still using PReP partition support? Julia Kreger asked Power users to weigh in ahead of a PTG discussion on retiring the code path.

Governance & Community

TC weekly summary (R+0). The TC was re-formed with three returning members (frickler, bauzas, cardoe) and one new (tonyb). Chair/vice-chair roles and VMT liaisons are being filled. The shade client library was approved for retirement (functionality long since absorbed by openstacksdk). For "leaderless" projects: OpenStack Charms has Felipe Reyes self-proposed as PTL; Venus and Vitrage remain on the path to inactive (Vitrage's core list needs cleanup; Venus has low activity).
